Community banners mark beginning of new regeneration project

Community groups in Bradford have been creating street banners to celebrate the city’s commitment to developing the World Mile scheme.

The route stretches just over one mile from Ivegate in the city centre up to the Carlisle Road junction and links the Asian boutiques at White Abbey Road to the city centre markets and shops.

The World Mile celebrates the multi-cultural diversity of the shops in that area – many of which are independently owned.

Local primary school children, youth groups and an adult community project worked with
the Council’s Museums and Galleries’ outreach team on the banners which were displayed during the World Mile Festival in September.

Councillor Adrian Naylor, Executive Member for Regeneration and Economy, said: “The World Mile project is about involving people, creating a new city centre destination, and encouraging and supporting the growth of existing and new small businesses.”

The traders along the route have already formed their own Traders Association and are working together to ensure the area offers a truly unique shopping experience.
