Green light for Bradford’s City Park
Funding is now in place for Bradford’s City Park, following an announcement by Bradford Council, giving the go-ahead for a city centre park including the largest water feature in any UK city.
A key part of the city’s regeneration programme, the six-acre City Park in the heart of Bradford is set to bring an extra £80m annually to the local economy through events alone.
The approval of the funding by the Council’s Executive Committee, follows the Council’s announcement in February of its commitment to provide £10m to support the scheme, with an additional £9.3m from regional development agency, Yorkshire Forward and the remainder from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) and the Regional Transport Board.
As a catalyst for Bradford’s regeneration, the City Park - which has evolved from the city’s 2003 Masterplan - will create a stunning public space in the city centre, featuring a shallow ‘Mirror Pool’, including causeways, innovative special effects and a series of more than 100 fountains.
The Park, equivalent in size to four football pitches, will be a world-class attraction featuring areas for rest, play and relaxation and will be a flexible space, attracting people of all ages into the city centre. It will be able to hold a range of large scale events - an important addition for the district’s economy - hosting up to 10,000 people.
Councillor Adrian Naylor, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Regeneration & Economy said: “The Park has been designed to bring jobs and prosperity to Bradford. It will attract visitors and investors and raise land and property values. This marks a key stage in Bradford’s regeneration and demonstrates the public sector commitment to investing in the city’s future.”
The City Park scheme went out to tender for construction in July and will start on site in autumn 2009.
