University Signs Historic Agreement for 1000 Bed Sustainable Student Village
A landmark scheme that will create a 1000 Bed Sustainable Student Village took a step closer today when The University of Bradford and Hayat Developments Group signed the ‘Heads of Terms’ contract.
The partners signed the contract that agreed the overall design, development and operation
of the Listerhills 1000 bed Sustainable Student Village, a £150m landmark project. This forms part of the impressive £3/4bn Learning Quarter, the biggest scheme in the district’s regeneration, which will provide a centre of excellence for the region through design, education and innovation.
Mi7 Developments, the project management company for the Hayat Group, are working in close partnership with the University of Bradford to deliver a highly sustainable development, that will support and encourage students to live a sustainable life. The Terms incorporate design concepts that will provide significant improvements in performance over current building regulations and a healthy environment with lower running costs, whilst reducing the overall environmental impact of the development.
The official signing took place at a ceremony in the University’s Board Room, Richmond Building. Signing the Terms were Mark Cleary, Vice Chancellor of the University of Bradford, and Sheila Dean of Hayat Developments. Also present to witness the signing were Councillor Adrian Naylor, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Regeneration and Economy, Middle East investors of the scheme and representatives from Cheshire based project management company, Mi7 Developments Ltd.
Mark Cleary, Vice Chancellor of the University of Bradford said: “The student village will have a huge impact on the university. As part of the wider “ecoversity” initiative, which is intended to promote sustainability throughout all aspects of the university’s life, including demonstrating sustainable living and learning, it will put the university on the map.”
Mohammed Ishtiaq at MI7 said, “The signing of the Heads of Terms is the culmination of three years of preparation, planning and negotiation, and highlights the long term partnership between the two partners on this landmark scheme. We look forward to a long and fruitful relationship with the University.”
“Bradford Council''''s Executive Member for Regeneration and Economy, Councillor Adrian Naylor, said: "This is fantastic news for everyone in the Bradford district, especially those connected with education and regeneration, and is yet more evidence of the private sector being confident in Bradford and seeing it as a place where they can do business.
“The student village is one of the landmark schemes in our city centre masterplan and it will create a state-of-the-art academic and ecological neighbourhood that will really complement the existing university and college campuses.
“The first phase of the development at £150m is part of an overall project worth £750m, which is the biggest scheme in our long-term vision of transforming the city centre to represent Bradford in the 21st century."
Maud Marshall, Chief Executive of Bradford Centre Regeneration said: “We are thrilled with this partnership between the public and private sectors, which demonstrates a prime example of a sustainable development within the city. This high quality scheme, made possible with Middle East investment, will contribute to the overall regeneration of the city and our vision to create a thriving and prosperous future for Bradford.”
Jan Anderson, from Yorkshire Forward added, “This revolutionary scheme is fully in line with the environmental aspirations of the city, and will set a precedent for other developers in the region to follow.”
This latest move will bring high quality student living to the city where they can live and learn about sustainability.
