The Masterplan is already generating sizeable amounts of investment with many projects either already begun or commencing shortly. To ensure that all these schemes will fit in with the long term aspirations we have for the city, a City Centre Design Guide has been created.
This guide has been developed in close association with one of the country’s leading urban design companies URBED. It gives planners and developers a framework on how they can deliver consistent, high quality architecture - and at the same time ensures the protection of the city’s many fine historic buildings and streets.
The guide:
- Develops the Masterplan by explaining the implementation of the constituent parts
- Applies the rules and principles of urban design in the context of the unique character and heritage central to Bradford
- Sets out a strategy and guidance for the treatment of the public realm in the city centre to design excellence and a consistency of approach in different areas
All projects within the city are now progressing in accordance with the guide and it has become part of the statutory planning documentation for Bradford Council.

Streetscape Design Manual
The draft Streetscape Design Manual provides guidelines on how the vision of the regeneration plans should be applied to the design of the city's streets. It is an ambitious working document, recently published in December 2006. It aims to create high quality streets that are pleasurable places to be in, provide a setting for the fine architecture, attract new visitors and increase the resident's sense of pride in Bradford. For more information please download the draft manual or summary leaflet below.
Bradford Design Agenda
BCR and Bradford Council believe that good design is a powerful tool in the city’s regeneration. Regeneration in Bradford is design-led. We want to support developers and their design teams working in the city to produce superior buildings through the Design Review process. The Design Agenda lays out this process and our active role in facilitating world-class design through planning to development on the ground. A PDF is available to download below.
